During the traditional period, Confucianism, with its profound cultural heritage and value system, served as a spiritual bond uniting the East Asian region. It shaped East Asia’s unique cultural community and social order, and built a civilizational world characterized by internal cohesion. Since the modern era, the introduction of Christianity to East Asia has disrupted the established framework of traditional East Asian culture, leading to a deep, multi-layered, and multidimensional interaction with Confucianism—ranging from the clash and dialogue of ideas to the fusion and adaptation of cultural practices. This interaction has not only profoundly reshaped the developmental trajectories of both traditions but has also exerted a far-reaching influence on the cultural, social, and intellectual evolution of the East Asian region. Its effects persist to this day, remaining a significant topic in the field of East Asian cultural studies.
To systematically examine the history of interaction between East Asian Confucianism and modern Christianity, to explore in depth the underlying mechanisms, historical impacts, and contemporary significance of this interaction, and to establish a platform for academic exchange among scholars in related fields both domestically and internationally, we plan to host the “East Asian Confucianism and Modern Christianity” Workshop. We hereby invite scholars from around the world to submit papers and cordially invite experts and scholars to contribute their outstanding works to this academic event.
I. Basic Workshop Information
Dates: November 28–29, 2026.
Venue: Japan (specific location to be determined).
II. Submission Guidelines
Topic: Submissions must closely align with the theme “East Asian Confucianism and Modern Christianity” and focus on the interactive relationship between the two. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following areas: the intellectual dialogue and cultural adaptation between East Asian Confucianism and modern Christianity; the impact of the introduction of Christianity on the transformation of East Asian Confucianism; the role of Confucianism in shaping the localization of modern Christianity in East Asia; the influence of their interaction on East Asian sociocultural and ethical concepts; and contemporary interpretations of Confucianism and Christianity in the modern and contemporary East Asian context.
Manuscript Guidelines: Submissions must be original research with clear arguments, thorough reasoning, rigorous logic, and proper language usage. They must not have been previously published in any journal, conference proceedings, or online platform, and academic misconduct is strictly prohibited. Please refer to the submission guidelines of Journal for the Study of Religion and History (ISSN: 3068-4803) for formatting requirements; specific details can be found in the journal’s official guidelines (journal website: CCSpub.cc/JSRH).
Publication and Translation Requirements: Selected papers, upon passing external peer review, will be published at a later date in Journal for the Study of Religion and History. Authors are responsible for translating their manuscripts into English.
Honoraria and Support: Upon publication,Journal for the Study of Religion and History will pay the corresponding honorarium to the author. Scholars selected for this workshop will receive a formal invitation letter from the organizers, who will cover round-trip travel expenses and accommodation costs during the conference.

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2026.
Review Notification: The organizers will convene a panel of experts to review the submissions. Review results and detailed workshop arrangements will be communicated to authors via email within one week after the deadline; authors are advised to check their email inboxes regularly.
Authors who receive an invitation letter are responsible for obtaining their own visas and purchasing insurance.
We warmly invite scholars in related fields from both China and abroad to actively submit papers, pooling wisdom and exchanging ideas to jointly advance the in-depth development of research on East Asian Confucianism and modern Christianity, thereby providing academic support for cross-cultural exchange and mutual learning among civilizations.
